Description: We had a great time on the Chinaman Night Run this past weekend! In attendance were Mike n Marilyn, Colin n Stephanie, and Ben and I. We all rallied at the Super 8 motel in Buena Vista, then headed to the Eddyline restaurant for a great dinner, then at about 7pm we headed to the Chinaman trailhead, aired down, and at about 7:30pm we headed up the trail.

Overall I'd say the trail itself is 'deeper' than I remember - the holes just seemed bigger, but overall we all did well. My Dakota's wheelbase and smallish 33" tires required engaging 3 uses of my front winch, and my rock sliders got the worst beating of any trail this year. After making it clean over the gatekeeper and the steep right uphill climb I thought I'd be fine, but right after I got up the hill and I promptly wedge the truck cleanly on the rock sliders - tipping forward and backward ever so slightly.....and time for the first of three similar winch pulls of the night. It dragged the sliders so much I'm not sure I'd take the Dakota on Chinaman until it's on bigger rolling stock. Mike's Yellowjacket and Colin's Rubicon both did much better, tho we all were dragging some chassis hardware now and then.

Night time ops on an otherwise familiar trail always provides a whole new 'version' of itself, and Chinaman at night is no different. We made our way through the major obstacles inside the loop, and honestly the worst part was the final section of the loop - it's really knarly and when all you have is LED's lighting the way it can get all kinds of wrong real quick - fortunately we're all pretty savvy drivers and spotters and we all came out in one piece.

As we came out the exit we came across two Jeeps (parked off the trail at exactly the same place as the TrailDamage JK that blew a sector shaft earlier this year) - one of the Jeeps broke a pitman arm and they had a runner going to get a replacement, whom we came across further towards the exit.

We all made it out and back to the Super 8, and after a good nights rest and a quick breakfast we all packed up and headed home - were back by noon.

Was a great trip - lots of fun and for sure 'different' than a daytime run. Thanks to all that came and for the good times!
